VOCE Choral Concert: 6th December 2008

Our supporters at All Saints Church in Weston Green, Surrey held a festive concert of choral music by the Voices of Cambridge Ensemble (VOCE) on Saturday, 6th December. The 300 seat church was packed for the evening event in which VOCE performed Christmas choral music from the past 400 years interspersed with poems from Betjeman and Tennyson. The beautiful All Saints Church was designed by the renowned architect Edward Maufe, (who also responsible for Guildford Cathedral and the Oxford Playhouse), and completed in 1939. It is well-known for its fine acoustics which VOCE set-off to their full effect. An evening collection was held at the end of the evening for TAO. The charity is extremely grateful for the continued support by the church and the congregation at Weston Green.

Brighton Pier-to-Pier Sponsored Swim: September 2008

Justine Moles is a Brighton architect who visited Uganda in 2008 to design a house to be used in TAO’s Integrated Development, Project 14 in the Rakai district of Uganda. The project includes building sixty small houses in remote rural areas, to be occupied by the carers of orphans and their families. Forty houses have now been built and the balance will be commissioned over the next twelve months. Justine’s house design is now being considered by the project team. The cost of the houses has been around £1000 each – and this remains the target.

To help meet the cost, Justine and 10 friends went on a sponsored swim from the west to the east pier in Brighton earlier this month. The weather was kind, but the sea was cold. All completed the challenge and are now collecting their sponsor money. Well done Justine – and many thanks.

TAO Golf Morning: 26th April 2008

The inaugural fund-raising TAO Golf Morning took place on Saturday 26th April at Rusper Golf Club (close to Horsham) in Surrey, UK. 16 TAO supporters attended the event and enjoyed a morning of golf on Rusper’s lovely wooded course. Despite a week of rain beforehand (and for a few days afterwards), the day was blessed with warm weather and bright sunshine.

The main stableford event was won by Sanjay Patel with a solid all-round game on a tricky course. Over £300 was raised for TAO from the event which we hope to run again in 2009. Many thanks to all those who attended and to Jill Thornhill at Rusper GC for making the first TAO golf morning such a success.
